Picture of River Nevern

Pembrokeshire has some of the finest sea fishing in Britain, especially for bass, while the rivers are noted for their salmon, trout and sea trout (sewin).

Sea Fishing
The Pembrokeshire coastline provides excellent and varied sea fishing and there is a wide variety of sea fish and various methods of fishing in and around Newport.

Rock & Beach Fishing
Mackerel, garfish, bass, pollack, wrasse, dogfish, conger, ray and tope can be taken from rock marks, whereas the local beaches can provide excellent fishing for bass and flatfish in the summer, and flounder, codling and whiting in the winter.

Estuary Fishing
The Nevern estuary can provide good sport on light tackle for bass in the summer, flounders in winter and mullet all year round.

Boat Fishing
Fishing boats can be chartered from a number of the harbours including nearby Fishguard (7 miles from Newport). These trips can range from a half hour tour of the harbour area to seek mackerel, to all day offshore reef and wreck fishing for large turbot, ling, conger, bream, ray, and pollock, and even blue and porbeagle shark are numerous within easy range.

Game Fishing
South West Wales has the best sea-trout fishing in the United Kingdom.

Sewin and Salmon
The sea-trout run from early April right through to September. With the large sea-trout first to appear followed by the smaller fish from mid June onwards. The fish run in all water conditions so throughout the season you are very likely to encounter fresh fish.

The sea-trout range in size from ¾lb to 20lb, although the average size is 2lb - 3lb with the seatrout run peaking in June, July and August.

The River Nevern rises near Crymych and flows to sea in Newport.  Fast flowing through dense woodland with deep holding pools the Nevern is a classic spate river and whilst it will hold both sewin and salmon throughout the late spring summer and autumn months it fishes best for a few days after a rainfall.

The nearby River Teifi which flows to sea in Cardigan (12 miles) and offers an alternative to the Nevern.  This World famous sewin river is less dependant on rainfall and generally fishes well from Late April through to the end of September, especially at night. Day, weekly and season tickets are available for both the Nevern and the Teifi.

Course Fishing
If you’re already into coarse fishing, or want to learn the ropes, Wales is the place to try. Nowhere in the world are you likely to find so much variety of first-class angling packed into such a small country. Just about all species are present, from Gudgeon to big hard-fighting Barbel to specimen Carp and Pike. Even a long holiday isn’t enough to sample everything, so unless you intend to specialise, there could be a problem of what tackle to bring along! There are several specialist coarse fishing lakes dotted around Pembrokeshire.

Anglers will need to purchase an appropriate Environment Agency Rod License.  These can be purchased from most post offices.
